What should happen?

  • The design respects the proportional distribution of spatial requirements for individual types of transport in descending order of priority: pedestrians, public transport, bicycle transport, individual car transport.
  • The study proposes widening the sidewalks, especially on the east side of the street, and improving access to the stop islands, which will have elevated (same level) connections to the sidewalks.
  • Additional pedestrian crossings will be added.
  • There will be a newly planted tree alley on the west side of the street. Up to 30 new trees will be added in total.
  • The study proposes moving the “Dlouhá třída” tram stop towards the Vltava river opposite the existing stop in the opposite direction. The two stops being opposite each other will create two new crossings and at the same time improve the accessibility of the waterfront and the river.
  • The study suggests short-term parking for deliveries in the street, while residential parking will be directed to the surrounding streets.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/h near the stops.
  • A new cycle lane is proposed in the section from the waterfront to the tram stop.
  • The parking solution is a separate chapter, as it concerns a wider area and is permanently problematic. The design examines the possibility of placing underground garages in the area in front of Štefánikův Bridge, furnished with thorough legal and operational safeguards to ensure sustainable usability, primarily for residents.

What exactly will change?

The proposed area is divided into four zones for this purpose according to the mode of use:

 

  • The area in front of the bridge (the area from the river to Řásnovka street), spatially undefined, open, the dominant feature being the Letná hill over the river, requiring additional work to transform it into a square and make it accessible for pedestrians. Due to the complexity, the “Area in front of Štefánikův Bridge” part was separated from the Revoluční Street Conceptual Study and will be addressed through a separate project.
  • The stops (the section between Řásnovka and Klimentská streets), a key zone for pedestrians in the area. Here, maximum emphasis is placed on the comfortable use of the urban space by pedestrians and public transport users. The area is cramped, the island stops are located opposite each other, and there are two crossings at their ends. There are trees on the west side.
  • The crossing (the section at the intersection of Revoluční and Dlouhá streets) is key for pedestrian permeability, and cycle and car transit. The space is lightened by moving the original stop closer to the river.
  • The square (the section from Dlouhá street to náměstí Republiky), the area where Revoluční Street opens into náměstí Republiky, is devalued by the location of the entrances to the Palladium underground garages and car traffic transiting through the city

Pedestrian zone

  • Improving the usability of Revoluční Street for pedestrian traffic
  • Widening of sidewalks in critical parts of the street

Public transport

  • The tram stop in the direction towards the river will be moved to open up the street and increase the distance from the náměstí Republiky stop.
  • The new location of the combined stops (TRAM + BUS) will significantly improve the public transport services not only in Revoluční Street, but also in the wider area, especially the area in front of Štefánikův Bridge.
  • The tram line axis will be shifted slightly to the west.
  • The tram stops will be island types with a raised lane.
  • The axial distance of the tracks will allow both buses and trams to use them.

Cycle transport

  • In the Dlouhá - náměstí Republiky section, cyclists will use traffic lanes on an equal footing with cars, and a pictogram corridor for cyclists will be marked on the road.
  • The vehicle part of the street space will be newly paved along its entire length for increased comfort

Motorized transport

  • In the stop sections, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 km/h, and will remain 50 km/h everywhere else.
  • The research and analyses carried out show that the car traffic is at the capacity limit and is damaging other modes of transport in the area, especially pedestrian and bicycle transport.

Vehicle parking

  • The study proposes short-term parking for deliveries in the street with shared parking for multiple enterprises, while directing residential parking into the surrounding streets.
  • Parking for the polyclinic will be provided in Hradební street.

Deliveries only 

  • The creation of short-term (15 min.) delivery points and a concept for their logistics.
