Cemeteries are integral parts of every city.

Cemeteries are integral parts of every city. We therefore need to think about the modifications and care these spaces need. The Prague Cemeteries Administration, in cooperation with us, has announced an urban-architectural competition to address the expansion of the Hostivař cemetery. The aim was to determine the form of a newly established cemetery department for the dignified storage of cremated human remains. The design by a team consisting of Stanislav Krčmárik, Ľubica Lašáková, Lukáš Radošovský, Róbert Bakyta, Matúš Grega-Jakub, Peter Janeček and Ivan Boroš won this competition.

Expansion of the site with a columbarium and a scattering meadow in the southern axis
Placement of the remains of the deceased in the cemetery walls
Creation of an ascetically simple orthogonal space divided into three parts - entrance space, utility area and the columbarium with the scattering meadow
Provision of ambient-intensity artificial lighting
Establishment of a forest park for local residents next to the cemetery itself

The aim of the competition was to find the optimal solution for a new cemetery department that will - through its function and expression - meet one basic condition, namely the dignified storage of cremated human remains.
