Prague has decided to unify its street furniture. A negotiated procedure with publication for a design for a public transport shelter and railing took place in 2018 in connection with a competition for a design for Prague benches, trash cans and bicycle stands. The authors of the winning design were teachers at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, the owners of the Olgoj Chorchoj studio and the company Artěl, Michal Froněk and Jan Němeček together with Aleš Kachlík and Martin Klanica. A tender for a new public transport shelter supplier was announced in February 2021. The result should be known in April 2021. The city will commence the gradual replacement of shelters on 1/7/2021.

What should happen?

  • Uniform public transport shelters will be introduced
  • Street furniture will have a uniform appearance 
  • There will be a reduction in the number of public transport shelter types
  • The quality of public space will improve
  • There will be information panels inside public transport shelters providing information about tram departures.
  • Public transport shelters will include Wi-Fi, a USB port and a speaker for the hearing impaired.
  • The test prototype placed in Palackého náměstí in 2020 is one of a series of seven different variations of shelters designed by the authors.
