The Baba “colony” is a distinctive concept of Czech and European Functionalist architecture.

The Baba “colony” is a distinctive concept of Czech and European Functionalist architecture. Today’s Baba housing estate is a stabilized area from the perspective of urban design and public space. It is, however, in need of treatment. It suffers from the poor condition and placement of underground utilities, such as sewerage lines, water lines, and gas lines. Other partial repairs are also planned, but have not as yet been systematically coordinated. The city therefore gave us the task of compiling a conceptual study. This will make it possible to combine and coordinate all ongoing parallel projects. The document will also increase the effectiveness of the funds invested. We launched participation with local residents and entities in February 2021.

What should happen and why? What will change?

What should happen?

  • Maintaining and developing the historic value of the area
  • Overall improvement in the quality of the surroundings for local residents
  • Creating amenities for visitors outside the residential zone
  • Renewing surfaces and other parts of the public space in such a way as to reinforce the identity and character of the Baba “colony” according to historical documents
  • Increasing the safety of barrier-free routes
  • Improved permeability and improved quality of connection for pedestrians with neighboring parts of the city
  • Reconstruction of the network of technical infrastructure in accordance with current trends, such as rainwater management
