Conceptual study for the Vítězná – Újezd – Legií Bridge locality

The Újezd area is an important part of Prague. The gateway to Petřín Park lies on the junction of the Lesser Town and the new city center of Smíchov. The area also links the Old Town to the New Town across Legií Bridge. You will also find well-known areas of recreation a short distance away, such as Kampa, Střelecký or Children’s Island. The Vítězná – Újezd – Legií Bridge locality does not match its significance or potential, either in terms of the architectural design or the functional design. This could change. Prague gave us the task of compiling an assignment for a conceptual study for the development of this area.

What should happen and why?

What will change?

  • Improving the quality and functionality of all coordinated plans and projects
  • Improving the quality of public space for inhabitants and visitors to the city
  • Increasing safety and comfort when crossing roads
  • Reducing barriers in the area and creating new pedestrian connections
  • Quieting down traffic at the Vítězná - Újezd junction
  • Improving the permeability of the area for pedestrians and cyclists
  • The foreground of the bridge on the Újezd side will undergo major transformation in the proposal. Sidewalk areas will be broadened, trees added, and the character of the place fortified so as to create a presentable entranceway to Újezd and a place where people can take a breather from the hectic city in peace on a bench under the trees.
  • Viennese-style tram stops have been chosen for the Újezd tram stops just before the crossing.
  • Removing the light signalling at the crossing, which will help with the fluidity of pedestrian movement.
  • Újezd supplemented with lines of trees and parking in bays.
  • The sidewalk beneath Petřín Park will be significantly broadened in light of the tram stops.
