A place where some of the capital’s oldest preserved architectural monuments meet the banks of the Vltava river.

A place where some of the capital’s oldest preserved architectural monuments meet the banks of the Vltava river. An area with both a rich history and a promising future. This is the location of Dvořákovo nábřeží and Na Františku. The flooding in 2002 and 2013 destroyed the road surface at Dvořákovo nábřeží. Prague is now repairing it. Sidewalks and adjacent public spaces, including a park, will also be restored. We have prepared a conceptual study for the overall transformation of the area, which could easily become a pleasant place in which to spend free time.

What should happen and why? What will change?

What should happen?

  • A balancing of the character of the waterfront from the perspective of different user groups
  • Improved conditions for pedestrians
  • Making the waterfront a more attractive location to spend time at - initiation of the restoration of the park and the development of a sports ground
  • Improving habitat conditions for treelines
  • Initiation of future mutually beneficial cooperation between actors investing in the area

Scope of the conceptual study - visualization

Reconstruction of the Dvořákovo nábřeží road

● The reason for this investment is the unsatisfactory technical condition of the road surface after it was damaged by the flooding in 2002 and 2013.
● The conceptual study will be the binding foundation for the project documentation for this plan, especially as regards the layout of public spaces.
● The key actor in this project is the Prague Roads Authority.

Comprehensive restoration of tree alleys at the embankment wall

● The reconstruction of the road is a great opportunity to restore the tree alley, which has importance for the whole of the city, and to provide the trees with significantly better conditions for healthy growth than they have today. This is an opportunity to replace the substrate in the root space and to replace the existing not very resilient lindens with a more resilient species.

Underground garages at the Nemocnice Na Františku hospital

● The garages should primarily provide visitor parking for the local hospital, and could also serve visitors to the waterfront area.
● The Prague 1 municipal district is the investor and main partner of the project.

Competition for the restoration and design of new small architectural elements and the visual identity of the waterfront

● On the waterfront there are a number of quality arts and crafts and small architecture elements whose role in the space could be more important than today.
● These include, for example, the gloriette limnimeter (which measures the water flow), the connecting staircase to the embankment, forged signs for marking places, railings, etc.
● The aim of this competition is to find a way to restore them as part of the strong visual identity of the waterfront and elements facilitating spatial orientation.

Adding furnishings to the embankment and incorporating it into the cultural life of the city

● This is a parallel project initiated on the basis of the Prague Banks Concept, which forms the ideological foundation of this conceptual study.
● The changes will include modifications to the traffic system on the embankment, the addition of equipment (toilets, street furniture) and a program (participation in city-wide events such as the Prague Food festival, for example).
● The key project partners are the administrator of the embankment, Trade Centre Prague and the operators of river vessels.

Vicinity of the InterContinental Prague hotel
  • As part of the systematic care for the hotel’s surroundings, in the near future the hotel’s recessed garden will be reconstructed and the possibility of opening the existing technical corridor from the garden to the embankment will be examined. A suitable filling for the area in front of the hotel should be found, and there should be wide sidewalks along Pařížská street and the waterfront.
  • The operator of the neighboring President hotel is also interested in modifying the sidewalk and the treeline.
  • The hotel operators, in cooperation with the Prague 1 municipal district, are the main partners.
Vicinity of the President hotel
  • In addition to investing in the appearance of the building, the hotel operator is also preparing to modify the area around the hotel.
  • This involves covering the supply yard and using its roof as a terrace for a hotel restaurant or an arrivals area for guests.
  • The terrace will become part of the plot between the school and the hotel, which should also simultaneously be improved.
  • The hotel operator in cooperation with Prague City Hall are the main partners.
Architectural and landscape competition for the convent forecourt
  • The competition proposals should encompass the whole block of gardens and the park around the convent as a whole to address the opening and development of a sports ground towards the waterfront, the location of a café and the overall landscape concept that will respond to the implemented convent gardens concept.
  • The key partners are the Prague 1 municipal district, which owns the majority of the land and the sports ground, and the National Gallery Czech Republic in the Convent of Saint Agnes, the buildings and lands of which largely form the identity of the area.
Reconstruction and opening of the Convent of Saint Agnes gardens to the public
  • The conceptual study links to the reconstruction of the Convent of Saint Agnes gardens.

Why is the embankment not being modified as well?

The conceptual study ideologically links to a parallel plan to improve the embankment equipment (street furniture + WC, use of the vaults). In addition, the embankment will not be the subject of construction changes in direct connection with the modifications to the road, but rather in connection with the new port system, which is yet to be formulated. The embankment is being considered both ideologically and conceptually.

Why wasn't an architectural competition announced?

TSK, which has its own designer, is the administrator and investor of the majority of the area in question. This designer was selected before IPR became involved in the project. The role of IPR therefore lies primarily in the conceptual coordination of known planned investments by the organizations operating on the waterfront.
