Public engagement and the involvement of local stakeholders are fundamental to effective urban planning. The Participation Office of Prague’s Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Prague), through its project “Your City, Your Space,” seeks to raise awareness of participatory planning and the tools it offers. Participation not only brings valuable insights from local communities – it also fosters trust in public institutions and helps prevent conflicts in urban environment. Strengthening its role in planning processes is therefore essential.

Your City, Your Space is a two-year participatory project that travels to six locations across Prague. It aims to involve local residents in open dialogue about the city and its future. The project both serves as a platform to encourage civic engagement and collects valuable insights from citizens of all generations.

At each stop, it includes a hands-on workshop with primary school students, followed by a public outdoor event with a traveling participatory game. In the workshop, students learn how cities work and how they can actively contribute to shaping their surroundings. Their ideas and creative work are then showcased at the public event, inviting the wider community to join the conversation. The project is funded by the Erasmus+ programme and carried out by the IPR Prague Participation Office in collaboration with local schools and municipal districts.

The event is open to everyone, from children to seniors.

When: Thursday, May 28 (9:00 – 18:00)
Where: Přátelství park at Prosek
Admission is free and no registration required.

Join us to play, share your ideas, and learn more about how Prague is planned - we look forward to seeing you there!

Workshop with Elementary School Students

At each stop, older elementary school students will take part in a workshop that introduces them to urban planning in a hands-on way. Through participatory games and group activities, they will learn about civic engagement and how they can help shape their local environment. Together, we visit interesting places in their neighborhood and try out ways to present an urban project. Their ideas and work will then be showcased at the public event.

Outdoor Event for the Public

In each neighborhood, a central gathering place will host a discussion hub where experts from the IPR Prague Participation Office will meet the public. The event will include interactive stations with participatory games, such as Our City, a wheel-of-fortune-style game where you can take on roles of different city dwellers and see how it feels to move through the city as, for example, an art student, a picnic lover, or a senior who enjoys crossword puzzles.

By taking part, you can help shape the future of your neighborhood – by talking with experts and neighbors, playing the game, or sharing your stories of everyday life in the city.

First Stop – Horní Měcholupy, Prague 15

The pilot event took place in spring 2025 in Horní Měcholupy. Over two days, residents of Prague 15 had the opportunity to take part in an interactive program combining play, creativity, and exploration of the urban environment. Together, we discussed how you perceive public space, what you feel is missing, and how it could develop in the future.

Second Stop – Prague-Kunratice

In autumn 2025, the traveling participatory game came to Kunratice. The square in front of the town hall was full of parents and children, active community members, and curious first graders from the nearby school. Before the event, we also held a workshop with 8th and 9th graders from Kunratice Elementary School, where we explored what makes a city, how young people can shape public spaces, and why it is important for their voices to be heard.

Third Stop – Prague-Slivenec

The third stop of the traveling participatory game brought us to Slivenec. The park by Návesní Pond buzzed with activity as students of all ages from the local elementary school joined in – some even returned with parents or friends. Local residents also stopped by and shared their ideas, observations, and personal perspectives on life in their neighborhood.

Fourth stop – Háje, Prague 11

In spring 2026, we brought our traveling participatory game to the residents of Háje. Over one hundred visitors came to the green area near the Mother Teresa Community Centre to try out the interactive game stations. Many locals stopped by during their afternoon walk through the park, and the event felt friendly and welcoming throughout.

Fifth stop – Libeň, Prague 8

In spring, we also visited the residents of Libeň. The cycle path near Libeň Castle, where we had our stand, attracted both locals and visitors from other parts of Prague. We therefore discussed not only everyday life in Prague 8, but also current city projects and the future development of the capital.

Additional Workshops Beyond the Main Project Stops

Alongside the six main stops of the Your City, Your Space project, we also organized additional workshops with schools and institutions that approached us themselves with an interest in participation and urban planning. These collaborations showed us that there is strong interest in these topics beyond the city districts directly involved in the project.
