How are housing affordability and access to healthcare evolving in Prague? IPR Prague presents the latest data in a user-friendly interactive application.

The Prague Institute for Planning and Development (IPR Prague) has introduced Sustainable Prague, a new web application which clearly explains what sustainable development in an urban environment entails and how this concept affects each and every one of us.

"Sustainability is often perceived only as environmental protection. However, its essence is much broader. It is an approach to development that Prague needs in the areas of housing, transport, public services, and environmental quality. With the help of the new story map, we want to bring these topics closer to people in an understandable way," says Ondřej Boháč, Director of IPR Prague.

The Sustainable Prague app is now available in both Czech and English on the Spatial Analysis Portal and was developed by IPR Prague’s Office of City Analysis. Through the personal stories of four residents—driver Adam, student Beáta, mother Celestýna, and senior Dalibor—the app illustrates the diverse needs of people living in Prague and how urban planning can effectively respond to them.

Sustainable development rests on a balance of three key pillars: social equity (accessibility), economic development, and environmental protection. This interactive story map not only tracks Prague’s progress in these areas, but also highlights ways residents can actively contribute to shaping the city—whether through public participation, everyday decisions, or by electing their representatives.

Statistical indicators are a key tool for measuring and evaluating sustainable urban development. Prague monitors and continuously evaluates more than 200 such environmental, social, and economic indicators. The data obtained from these indicators help experts and city politicians analyze whether Prague is moving towards its desired goals—for example, whether the number of days with extreme temperatures is decreasing, the availability of services is increasing, or the quality of public space is improving. This analytical work enables responsible and informed decision-making on the city's continued development.
